President returns recommendation
President K R Narayanan, late last night, sent back the Union Cabinet's recommendation for for the dismissal of the Rabri Devi Government in Bihar and imposition of President's Rule. The President returned the recommendation made by the BJP-led coalition on the ground that application of Article 356 of the Constitution was "not warranted as the constitutional machinery in the state has not broken down."

Rabri seeks meet with President
Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi yesterday send a fax to President K R Narayanan seeking an appointment with him to explain the issues raised against her Government. Meanwhile, a harried BJP was grappling with its allies' opposition.

Pawar denies bid to form alternative Govt in Maaharashtra
Leader of Opposition Sharad Pawar has said that the Congress has no intention of forming an alternative Government in Maharashtra despite instability in the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition. He opined that very hard decisions will be needed to retrieve the state from the debt trap and, therefore, Congress would prefer a clear-cut majority in the Assembly.
