Edited tapes of Tripp-Lewinsky talks gets nod from the House

AGENCIES
WASHINGTON, Sept 26: A US House of Representatives committee has voted to release a heavily edited version of the tape-recordings of Linda Tripp's conversations with Monica Lewinsky, which sparked an impeachment investigation of President Bill Clinton.

The committee voted 35-0 on Friday to remove large sections of the tapes involving privacy considerations and other sensitive material, members said. ``I believe the vote was to release redacted versions ofthe audiotapes,'' Rep Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat told reporters.

A judiciary commitee spokesman said a transcript of the tapes would be release d next week, but the audiotapes could take up to 10 days to duplicate.

It was the tapes, secretly recorded by Tripp of the former White House intern's tales of an affair with the President, that prompted independent counsel Kenneth Starr's investigation into the Lewinsky case and led to his report saying Clinton had committed 11 possibly impeachable offences.

Some Democrats claimed the tapes shouldbe released because they will show Tripp prompting Lewinsky and leading her along.

Jones demands $1m

WASHINGTON: Paula Jones has offered to settle her sexual harassment lawsuit against President Bill Clinton for one million dollars. Clinton's attorney, however, responded with a 5,00,000 dollars counter-offer, legal sources said today.
