Quick disposal of cases will help people retain faith in judiciary

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 27: Expressing concern over the number of pending cases in the various courts, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court K G Balakrishnan said that Lok Adalats were serving a useful purpose by disposing of a large number of cases thus lessening the workload of regular courts.

After inaugurating the 1746th Lok Adalat, organised by Vadodara District Legal Services Authority and Baroda Bar Association at the Nyaya Mandir premises on Sunday, Balakrishnan said that there were many pending cases in the regular courts, which could be disposed by the Lok Adalats, as it was not possible to settle them through other means.

About 600 cases involving payment of compensation were settled by 10 conciliatory boards of the Lok Adalat held today.

Quick disposal of cases to provide justice and relief to the people was necessary to retain their faith in the country's judiciary, he said. ``We, at least, have a system people still believe in,'' he commented, adding that every effort should be made to ensure that people did not lose trust in it.

According to Balakrishnan, people would certainly resort to other measures to settle their grievances if the judiciary failed to deliver justice, which could ruin the country. ``Cases should be disposed off as amicably as possible with the cooperation of members of the bar and judiciary,''he said.

He also appreciated those organising Lok Adalats on Sundays by sacrificing their personal comforts.

District Judge D P Buch welcomed the Chief Justice, who was accompanied by by three High Court judges, M R Kalla, K R Vyas and A M Kapadia, while Baroda Bar Association president Narendra Tiwari presented a vote of thanks.
