VADODARA, Sept 27: Farmers growing vegetables in various parts of the district have threatened to stop vegetable supply from October 2, if the administration failed to check by then ``illegal'' commission charged by agents and greengrocers despite a recent ruling from the State government.A decision in this regard was taken at meeting held by a section of the Vadodara District Khedut Samaj and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh here at Sardar Shak market on Sunday afternoon.
Besides local leaders, farmers from nearby rural areas and Surat also spoke on the occasion. The leaders, including Karsan Patel, Sardar Rathor and H K Bhatt, while threatening an agitation, exhorted the gathering to unite and collectively fight against ``illegal'' charging of commissions by brokers and traders at the vegetable markets. They said though the State government had recently abolished these charges (officially known as market charges), some brokers were still charging it under one pretext or the other, while buying vegetables from farmers.
The leaders are demanding official vending points by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, the Vadodara Urban Development Authority or the District Collectorate.
The farmers will call on the district collector on Monday and also submit a memorandum in the context. The leaders said they will also hold a separate meeting at Wakal Sewa Kendra, Sayajigunj on September 30 to chalk out the future course of action.
