Keen contests in Special Olympics

CHANDIGARH, Sept 27: Notwithstanding the handicap, intense competition was witnessed in the individual and team events as the Special Olympic third National Games rolled on to the third day at the Panjab University campus.

Some participants were even seen shedding tears when they lost to their opponents while other who won the top honours were full of joy. But one of the swimmer from Kerala -- Abhilesh PJ, though won a silver medal in the boys 100 metres freestyle event, was happy with his performance. ``He is feeling great,'' disclosed PA Johny, father of the Abhilesh. He added: ``Since he had done only three day of training before coming to Chandigarh, he is satisfied with his efforts''.

However, the team from West Bengal had been training for the past three months for the big event. `` We had conducted a coaching camp for the selected swimmers at Calcutta. Initially, I had to encounter some difficulties but eventually I was able to teach them the right technique to stroke and dive,'' said SK Ghosh, coach of the West Bengal team, which had bagged a number of medal in the swimming event.

In badminton the participants have been divided into groups taking into account their individual skill and age. The matches are being conducted on round robin league basis.

Shuttlers from Tamil Naidu dominated the junior boys singles event while West Bengal had a complete sway in the senior group.

In the senior girls section, Monik Sagi of North West Zone won both the league match. She defeated Namrita Singh 13-10, 11-5 in the first encounter and beat Madhuparno Sarkar of West Bengal 11-5, 11-0, in the second match.

In basketball five teams are competing in the boys group while four are in the girls section. The contest in the team event is over. Competition in the individual would begin tomorrow.

Competition in table tennis, cycling, football, handball and athletics events were also held.

Basketball: Team: Boys: Maharashtra bt Orissa 12-0; Maharashtra bt NWZ 28-6; Kerala bt Orissa 8-4; Kerala bt AP 14-0; NWZ lost to Kerala 0-14.Girls: MP bt Maharashtra 16-0; TN bt Karnataka 12-0; MP lost to TN 4-24; NWZ bt AP 10-5.

Swimming: Girls: 8 to 11 yrs: 25m freestyle: 1 Anupam (WB), 2 Deepa (WB).16-21 yrs: 100m freestyle: 1 Sanjukta Ghosh (WB), 2 Kanchan Mandal (WB), 3 Banty Das (WB).

Boys: 12 to 15 yrs: 50m backstroke: 1 Niloy Banerjee (WB), 2 Neeraj MItra (Karnataka), 3 D Mandal (WB). 100m freestyle: 1 Sanjay mandal (WB), 2 Abhilesh PJ (Kerala), 3 L Noordhin (TN).

Badminton: Boys: Junior: Singles: Kanan M (TN) bt Dhanpal (TN) 15-4, 15-5; Davinder (NW) bt Kartik (TN) 13-15, 15-6, 15-2; Dhanpal (TN) bt Anoop Jain 15-3, 15-1.

Girls: Singles: Ratika (Mah) bt Priya Malik (AP) 11-1, 11-0; Richa Devgan (NW) bt Priya Malik 11-0, 11-0.
