Bokaro boys win title via shootout

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 28: Goalkeeper Shambhu Mishra was the toast of SAIL-sponsored Sector IX-A High School, Bokaro's 5-4 victory over Electric Veng Middle School, Mizoram in the final of Subroto Cup (under-14) football tournament at Ambedkar Stadium here today. The title-win was achieved via penalty shootout after the teams were locked goalless despite 15 minutes of extra time.

After the Bokaro team had forged 5-4 in the shootout, Shambhu Mishra saved the fifth shot of the Mizoram team, taken by Lalmingshanga. It was a case of do-or-die for the Mizoram boy, all eyes being focussed on him as he aimed at the net. But he was obviously tense and nervous as he took the shot which went straight to the goalkeeper who took it gleefully with both hands, to the cheers of the team's supporters.

While Shambhu Mishra proved the hero of Bokaro team's victory and was mobbed by his team-mates and officials, a crestfallen Lalmingshanga cursed himself for missing the target.

Vanlahng Haka, AnindaHamanta, Durga, Sundar Lal Hembrem and Sushil Kumar hit the mark with their shots for the Sail team in the shoot-out while Lalbemruata, Laltanruia, Vanlal Chuanga and Malsawmdwngliana were successful with their shots for the Mizoram team.

The Aizwal-based boys were unlucky after showing all the initiative through the barren regulation and extra-time, and eventually paid for not holding their nerve.

Electric veng, who attacked well through the combination of their skilful captain Malsawmtluanga, Lalrinkima and Lalnun Mawla and held firm in defence through Laltanruia and goalkeeper Lalrakzualla, should have won the match but for what looked like a goal being disallowed for offside two minutes from end of regulation time.

Lalrinkima, sent clear by Malsawmtluanga, was fouled inside the box and referee Bhawatiraj awarded an indirect freekick. Malsawmtluanga put the ball in with a neat chip, but the flag was up for offside.
