Officers' reshuffle raises storm

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPT 29: A major reshuffle of Revenue officers in Mumbai on Monday has raised several eyebrows, with the cadre mostly attributing it to the change in leadership of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).

The orders of transfers of Commissioner level have come about soon after the chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, S D Mohile taking over on August 17. Mohile was in Mumbai last week also.

In the most important change, Chief Commissioner Customs, Mumbai, B K Bakshi, has been transferred as DG Service Tax. G S Tampi who was transferred to that post in November last year is back as Chief Commissioner, Mumbai.

Tampi was transferred rather unceremoniously in circumstances that became controversial because of press reports on rampant corruption in the Customs department. He had taken over as chief commissioner in May last year.

R C Verma, Commissioner Central Excise (CCE) Mumbai-I, is now posted as ADG Anti-Evasion Mumbai. SPS Pundir, Custom Commissioner, Calcutta will takehis post.

SS Bedi, CCE IV is now CC, Nhava Sheva. SS Sekhon, CCE Pune II, is now ADG, Inspection Customs and Central Excise. Moheb Ali, Commissioner, Imports, now goes as ADG, National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics (NACEN). ZB Nagarkar, ADG NACEN is now CCE (Appeals), Mumbai.

Dr GK Pillai, ADG DGICCE, is now CCE (Appeals) Mumbai, Chitra Saha, CCE (A) is now posted as CCE (Adjudication), Mumbai. PC Jha, ADG, Anti Evasion, is now Customs Commissioner, Airport. YG Parande, present CC Airport, will take over as Customs Commissioner, Imports.

Ramesh Ramachandran, Commissioner Nhava Sheva, will take over as CCE IV, Mumbai.

SD Khare, CCE (A) Mumbai, will now take over as ADG, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Mumbai. V Sridhar, whom he replaces, will be CCE Appeals, Mumbai.

Pathania back in Mumbai

While orders of the Customs and Excise Commissioners were issued on Monday, orders of Income Tax Commissioners were released on the weekend. For Mumbai, the only and most significant newposting is that of RS Pathania, DG Investigation, Ahmedabad, as Chief Commissioner III, Mumbai. Pathania was transferred last year in wake of the controversy generated on the visit of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor to his residence in Hyderabad Estate.

The Indian Express had exposed the `hush-hush' meeting by publishing a photograph of Karisma arriving at the building one Friday evening with her mother.

Pathania will be replaced in Ahmedabad by C M Betgiri, CC Cochin.

The transfer orders of Chief Commissioners and CITs were in abeyance for quite some time.

C V Padmanabhan, CC III, Mumbai, will now go as CC, Hyderabad.

Raj Narain, DG Investigation, Delhi will take over as CC-I Delhi, while S C Saxena, DG Administration will take over as CC-II, Delhi. O P Srivastav, CC-I Delhi, will take over as DG Administration.

J S Ahluwalia, CIT Agra is now posted to Patna as Chief commissioner.
