W Bengal claim top honours

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE  
CHANDIGARH, Sept 29: West Bengal contingent claimed top honours, winning first places in handball (senior women), volleyball (senior men), football (senior men), cricket (senior men) and unified sports in the Special Olympics third National Games which concluded at the Panjab University campus here today.

Karnataka bagged the first place in handball in senior men's division while Kerala took the first place in the senior women's section in volleyball.

Maharashtra got gold medals in the junior boys section in football and basketball (senior men).

West Bengal also got gold medals in the relay races in the boys' 22 to 29 years group and in the above 30 years in the women's section.

In the last event of the day, 4 X 100 metres relay in the men's group, Delhi took the first place while Bihar and Orissa got the second and third positions respectively.

The best `State Programme Chairman's Trophy' went to Andhra Pradesh while West Bengal took the best march past award.

The chief guest on the occasion, Mahabir Prasad, Governor of Haryana gave away the prizes to the teams.

Athletics: Relay races: Boys (22 to 29 yrs): 4 X 100m: 1 West Bengal, 2 Kerala, 3 Andhra Pradesh.

Above 30 yrs: 1 Tamil Naidu, 2 Orissa, 3 Maharashtra. 12 to 15 yrs: 1 Maharashtra, 2 Kerala, 3 Karnataka. 16 to 21 yrs: 1 North West Zone, 2 Madhya Pradesh, 3 West Bengal.

Girls: 4 X 100m: 22 to 29 yrs: 4 X 100m: 1 West Bengal, 2 Kerala, 3 Maharashtra. Above 30 yrs: 1 Tamil Naidu, 2 Orissa, 3 Maharashtra. 12 to 15 yrs: 1 Kerala, 2 Maharashtra, 3 West Bengal. 16 to 21 yrs: 1 Andhra Pradesh, 2 Maharashtra, 3 Tamil Naidu. Football: Individual skill: above 16 yrs: Sandeep (AP), 2 MA Harnnan (AP), 3 Amit (Mah). 12 to 15 yrs: 1 Amarjeet (Bih), 2 Anthony D' Souza (Mah).

Vollayball: Individual skill: Men: Group A: 1 Girish (Kar), 2 Mukesh (Kar), 3 Tawin Sheikh (Mah). Group B: 1 Prashant (Mah), 2 Ahmed Sheikh (Mah), 3 Rakesh Shetty (Kar).

Women: Group A: 1 Jenim Mampally (Ker), 2 Jameli (Kar), 3 Saridha.

Handball: Individual skill: Women: 1 Neeradha (AP), 2 Alefiya Merchant (Mah), 3 Swegata (WB). Men: Group A: Team: 1 Karnataka, 2 Kerala, 3 Maharashtra. Boys: Group B: 1 Tamil Naidu, 2 West Bengal, 3 North West Zone.
