Mamta Modern lift Subroto Cup

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 29: After a gap of 38 years, a school from Delhi won the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament for juniors when Mamta Modern High School (Vikaspuri) beat Christ Collegiate School (Orissa) 5-3 via tie-breaker in the final at Ambedkar Stadium here today. In the first edition of the tournament in 1960, DAV HSS (Daryaganj) and DAV HSS (Chitragupta Road) were declared joint winners.

Super goalkeeping by Arjun Singh enabled Mamta Modern win the final in penalty shootout.

Christ Collegiate, playing their second Subroto final (they finished runners-up to Arya Vidyapeeth, Guwahati in 1992), were just five away minutes from victory before a defensive lapse shattered their title hopes.

The Cuttack school took the lead in the ninth minute when Santosh Rao scored a goal off an acute angle and defended the lead till the 65th minute.

When they looked set for a win they conceded an indirect kick. Striker Devash took advantage of a gap in the defensive wall and with a powerful shot scored the equaliser.

In the penalty shootout (the teams failed to score in the 15-minute of extra-time, penalty shootout was resorted to end the stalemate. In the penalty shootout, mamta modern school goal keeper brought off a good save when he blocked santosh Rao's shot and then D.Lakra shot over and that ended christ collegiate's hunt for the trophy.

In the penalty shootout, ishwar singh, deepak, devesh and lingya converted their spot kicks for the winners while only firoz khan and shiekh fayaz could hit the target for cuttack school.

Christ collegiate, who finished runners up in 1992 also, dominated the proceedings most of the time and the local team looked disjointed and without any plan. The hot and humid conditions also had its effect on the players who could not give their best.

Cuttack school should have increased the lead in the first half but arjun singh brought off a fine save when he foiled Yusuf Khan. in the first session cuttack goalkeeper R Behra was hardly tested. The committee chose the following as the best on the basis of their performance in the tournament.
