From the heart
In his address to the Asia Society in New York, the Prime Minister has given voice to the angst Indians feel about their ties with Washington. Vajpayee espoused a vision of strong Indo-American links forming the mainstay of the international democratic order. He drew parallels between their political culture while forthrightly lamenting America's failure to acknowledge India as a responsible international citizen. He was outspoken and right, so far as he went.

A cover-up bid
Union Home Minister L.K. Advani's call for a national debate on Article 356 of the Constitution shows how piqued the ruling party is at its failure to dismiss the Rabri Devi government. He and several other leaders of the party have reiterated that Bihar is a fit case for invoking this Article. If they are so convinced about their stand, does anything prevent them from going ahead with their plan? After all, the President is constitutionally bound to dismiss the Bihar government if the Cabinet persists in its recommendation.

Waiting for the scholar-justice
On October 10, when Adarsh Sein Anand takes over as India's 29th Chief Justice, he would bring with him not only many firsts but also the much needed moral capital.
