HYDERABAD, Sept 30: Heavy rains in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh have claimed 25 lives so far and caused heavy damage to standing crops.Five deaths were reported from Guntur district, four each from Kurnool and Vizianagaram districts, three from Mahaboobnagar and one each in Ananthapur, East Godavari, Cuddappah, Nizamabad, Visakhapatnam, Khammam, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts, Revenue Minister T Devender Goud told reporters here today.
Kurnool district was the worst hit with 60,000 hectares of sunflower, 10,000 hectares of groundnut and 5000 hectares of cotton damaged by the heavy rains. Paddy crops in Guntur and East and West Godavari districts have also been affect severely, though the extent of damage is yet to be worked out. The minister said that relief camps had been set up at Nandyal and Vijayawada.
