Customs XI march into quarter finals

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Sept 30: Customs XI qualified for the quarter-final after beating Shivalik Club by 3-0 in the 28th All India Gurmit Memorial hockey tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium today. They next clash with seeded Air India for a semi-final berth.

Customs XI, led by international Rahul Singh, enjoyed an upper hand throughout the match against Shivalik Club whom they beat by 3-0. However, credit must be given to the young Shivalik boys for holding their formidable rivals goalless in the first half. Customs' Suresh accounted for two (42nd and 50th minutes) goals for his team. Ibrahim got the third goal in the 52nd minute.

Sikh Regiment Centre prevailed over ASC by 6-5 in the sudden death tie-breaker after the teams were tied one-all in the stipulated 70-minute session.

As the tie-breaker session also ended 3-all, the sudden death rule was applied. A S Thimmaiah scored for ASC while B J Cariappa missed his push. Baljit Singh and Rajpal engineered the victory for SRC by converting their pushes in the sudden death. Baljit Singh (2), Rajpal (2) and Sukhminder were the scorers for the winners. For ASC AS Thimmaiah (2), Anil Minz and K K Poonchha converted their strokes. In the regular session, SRC forged ahead in the 22nd minute through Sukhminder Singh while KK Poonachha restored parity for ASC with a penatly corner goal in 31st minute.

Local lad Chanderpal Singh steered his team into pre quarter-final as Western Railway snuffed out the challenge of Assam Regiment by 5-2. Assam Regiment had to blame themselves for their early exit as they missed half a dozen open chances.

Their attack was sharp, clearance was first-time, trapping was outstanding and dribbling was excellent. Yet they lacked the finishing touches. Simply it was not their day. A solo run in the middle by centre-forward Surnjit helped Assam Regiment score their first goal in the 66th minute through B Barla. Three minutes later, a free-hit by L Huma was just guided into the goal by Surnjit.

For Western Railway, Chanderpal Singh (29th, 51st and 60th minutes), Ingo Singh (22nd) and Mukhtiar Singh (39th) scored.

In another match, Sind Bank Academy ousted Punjab State Electricity Board by 3-2 after leading 3-0 at half time. Centre-forward Sandeep Singh (11th, 34th) and outside-left Ajitpal Singh (19th) were the bank team's scorer. Hardyal Singh (44th) and Shawinderjit (45th) reduced the margin for PSEB.

Thursday's fixtures
Bhopal XI vs RCF (10.30 a.m); Air Force vs Sind Bank Academy (12 noon); Western Railway vs Chandigarh XI (1.30 p.m.) and Northern Railway vs Sikh Regiment Centre (3 p.m).
