MUNICH, OCT 1: Jana Novotna crumbled with victory in sight today, wasting a match point before losing in three sets to Switzerland's Patty Schnyder in the first round of the Grand Slam Cup.The Czech, who triumphed at Wimbledon this year but has frequently blown big chances in the past, twice served for the match before Schnyder won 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. ``I was tired and towards the end of the end of the third set, I was getting cramps,'' said Novotna, who turns 30 on Friday.
In the men's competition, Andre Agassi whitewashed France's Cedric Pioline 6-0, 6-0 in 37 minutes. It was the shortest match in the history of the tournament.
Women are playing for the first time in the Munich event for the best performers in the year's four Grand Slams, which offers a huge $6.7 million in prize money.
