Bangladesh stun Netherlands

ELISTA, OCT 1: Bangladesh continued their good work in the first round by upsetting eighth seed The Netherlands 2.5-1.5 in the second round of the 33rd Chess Olympiad here last night.

Earlier, Indian men had held Russia-II to a 2-2 draw while the women went down 1-2 to fifth seed Poland in the second round.

After two rounds, the USA and Argentina shared the lead with 7.5 points each in the men's section while in the women's category Yugoslavia were in front with a tally of six points.

Bangladesh, playing without their only Grand Master Niaz Murshed in this Olympiad, struck through Zia-ur-Rahman and Reefat Bin Sattar, who defeated Loek van Wely and Van Der Wiel respectively on the top and fourth boards.

Their junior player Abdullah Al Rakib held strong GM Jeroen Piket to a draw on the second board while Enamul Hossain lost to Nijboer.
