BMFC emerge top league leaders

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Oct 1: Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) sounded success for professional soccer in style at the Cooperage today.

The debutante club made sure of the Gulf Oil WIFA Super Division league title in resounding fashion a 4-0 win over Bank of India (BoI) who suffered only their second defeat in the nine-team league.

In what coach Jamshed Nassiri described as their best display in the league, strikers Abdul Khalique with two goals, Herbert Philip and Nigerian Emeka Achilefu powered BMFC to a clinical victory over a hapless bank side who looked forlorn without injured central defender Evaristo Cardoz.

The winners led 2-0 at half-time and were unrelenting in wrapping up the match and the title after the change of ends.

A cock-a-hoop BMFC seemed scarcely perturbed by the Central Bank of India's player eligibility case referred to the All-India Football Federation by defending champions Air-India. In the severest outcome of nullifying Central Bank of India's results, BMFC may be required to grab apoint from the league's concluding match against Air-India on October 5.

In an overwhelmingly one-sided match, BMFC staved off early anxiety caused by a spate of missed chances Abdul Latif Sereki missing three in a row before Abdul Khalique broke the deadlock in the 34th minute.

A quick one-two with Seriki and a clinical dispatch of the return past Mitra in goal and BMFC fans began scenting success strong and clear.

The whiff became stronger two minutes later when Herbert Philip, for once, struck home after latching on to a lob by Emeka but the prospective champions were denied a thumping lead at half-time by some prodigality.Seriki, sadly off target, shot over with Mitra helpless and the custodian, quite outstanding in the BoI goal, blocked striker Kasif Jamal's snap attempt with his feet as the first half ticked by.

But there was no mercy in the quest for glory. BMFC made it 3-0 within two minutes of the restart, courtesy a rampaging Abdul Khalique, whose resurgence in the last three matches camein for praise by his Iranian coach.Khalique executed a perfect volley to the roof after mid-fielder Harsharanjit Singh sent in a long ball into the box made it 3-0.

Mitra's heroics, though, continued unabated his ideal tall frame sliding confidently deflected a hungry Khalique's essay for a corner. But the 'keeper's gallantry fast became a battle for a lost cause.

Compounding a dismal scoreline was the red carding of wing-back S Thakur after a second booking -- a brutal foul on Seriki that incurred referee JP Singh's wrath in the 83rd minute.

BMFC rubbed it in three minutes later. Emeka with a clinical and spectacular finish from 25 yards. Comfortably positioned, the Nigerian, time and space to spare, boomed a shot to the right corner of the goal leaving Mitra a spectator.

A-I PRODIGAL: Air-India, shaking off disappointment of possibly relinquishing the title after three seasons, went for broke to pile on the goals. against bottom-placed Income-Tax.. Abbas Ali Rizvi struck two in the firsthalf before Debadas Sen put away a third -- not with a charachteristic strong header this time, though.

In the meantime, striker Anthony Fernandes and mid-field star Godfrey Pereira muffed ample chances to cause consternation in the camp and brook a post-match tongue lashing from coach Bimal Ghosh.

Champions not yet decided: Bimal

Bimal Ghosh, coach of twice running Super Division champions Air-India, refuted BMFC's claim to the title after today's thumping win over Bank of India.

Ghosh's contention hovered around his team's appeal to the AIFF on WIFA's handling of Central Bank of India's breaking players' eligibility rules. The bank side fielded Valky D'Silva who had not secured transfer papers from Goa in the league. That led to one of the many disputes affecting this season's league among which was Mahindras' Salim Ansari's controversy.

The WIFA tribunal fined CBI Rs 5,000, barred D'Silva from further participation but did not effect any loss of points or scratching CBI from the nine-teamleague.

According to Ghosh, should the AIFF advise the same, Air-India are back in the race for the title. BMFC won both their encounters against CBI while Air-India drew one and won the other.

Ghosh, though, made it clear that he had nothing against BMFC. He said: ``They (BMFC) play good soccer without flouting any rules off the field and I respect them. But Ghosh added: ``Rules and technicalities must be respected as well and for that reason I feel the champions are still to be decided.''
