Deaf-mute family does a Gandhi at bus station

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOLLAM, Oct 3: Most Indians spend October 2 in languid holiday spirit. At best, they pay lip service to the ideals of the Father of the Nation. One family in Moovattupuzha here, however, believes it can foster the Mahatma's legacy in its own small way.

All eight members of the family -- four men, three woman and a child -- are deaf-mute, and commemorate important national occasions by performing `shramdaan,' or constructive work.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, they cleaned the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation Bus Station here.

All the children born to Mohammad Kunju of Kavumkara Madathil Badhira-Mooka Bhavanam in Moovattupuzha are deaf-mute. M A Syed Kunju, the eldest in the family, is employed as a store-keeper in Alwaye.

On this occasion, he led the team. Noushad, Jaffar, an artist, Suhara, Amina, Jameela, Sadique Hussain and a three-year old child cheerfully carried out his bidding.

The family possesses free KSRTC buses, and have undertaken to clean up public places, especially KSRTCbus stations, in several parts of the State on earlier occasions.

The family came to know of the poor maintenance of the Kollam bus station from the media and sought the permission to clean it up. On October 2, they began the work at 8 am and finished by 3 pm.

In all their work, a stiff motto goades them on: `Talk less and work more. Only then will the country progress.'
