An undertrial suspected to be involved in robbery cases died in police custody at the Kandivali police in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to the police, accused Raju Rathod (40) was arrested on September 29 for allegedly robbing gold from jewellery shops falling under the jurisdiction of Kandivali police station.

A Metropolitan Magistrate had remanded him to police custody till October 7. On Saturday, Rathod complained that he was suffering from unbearable pain in his stomach and was also feeling giddy. He was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital where doctors attending him said he was a diabetes patient. A medical examination revealed that his sugar level had risen to 756. Rathod's condition deteriorated and he succumbed at around 1 am on Saturday morning, claimed police.

New MMC vice-president elected

Eminent physician and clinical pharmacologist Sudhir Dagaonkar has been elected as the vice-president of Maharashtra Medical Council.Dagaonkar, an associate professor at K J Somaiyya Medical College has been a member of the Council since 1984.

Chowk named after Madhuriben Shah

The chowk at the junction of L Jagmohandas Marg and Manav Mandir Road at Napean Sea Road has been named ``Educationist Dr (Smt) Madhuriben R Shah Chowk'' in memory of the former chairperson of University Grants Commission. Dr Shah was also the former president of the Gujarat Research Society.
