Aussies a wicket away from glory

ASSOCIATED PRESS
RAWALPINDI, OCT 4: Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy celebrated his world record in style against Pakistan today but his team will have to wait a day for its near-certain win, their first in this country in 39 years.

As stumps were drawn on the fourth day of the first cricket Test at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Pakistan which needed 244 runs to make Australia bat again, was hopelessly placed at 137 for nine with Salim Malik waging a lone battle at 48 and last man Saqlain Mushtaq unbeaten on 3.

The 34-year-old Healy, playing in his 104th Test, broke his idol Rodney Marsh's 355-victims record in the second session of play when he caught Wasim Akram for 15.

A brief spell of heavy showers delayed play for nearly two hours after tea with Pakistan reeling at 111 for seven. But groundsmen dried up the square quickly and play was extended for an hour.

Australia had piled up 513 in its first innings in reply to Pakistan's 269 runs.

Three dismissals in seven deliveries in the first session put Australia firmlyon the road to victory after Pakistan collapsed dramatically.

Pakistan skipper Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar were off to a cautious start and put on a watchful 24 runs in the first hour under the overcast conditions. But once McGrath changed ends and bowled into the strong breeze, Sohail played on to his stumps after scoring 13 runs.

Damien Fleming then prodded the collapse in his fourth over of the day, trapping Muhammad Wasim and Inzamam-ul Haq leg before both batsmen could begin to score.

From 32 for three, Pakistan was further reduced to 32 for four when Colin Miller got a lucky decision of Saeed Anwar from English umpire Peter Willey. The left-handed Pakistan opener, who made 145 in the first innings, was struck on the front pad while stretching a long way forward.

Malik got a life shortly before lunch when Mark Waugh dropped the right-hander in the second slip off McGrath.

Pakistan lost five wickets in the second session, when Healy completed his world record.

``It's the moment I will cherishall through my life,'' he told reporters later. ``I was on the moon.''

The Australian wicketkeeper, who equalled Marsh's record on the first day of the Test claiming the first two catches, had to wait for two more days before reaching the milestone. ``It was something like a batsman was on 99 and he had to wait for 150 odd overs to complete his century,'' Healy said of his two days waiting for the world mark.

Pakistan has only twice before been beaten by an innings on home soil, losing by an innings and 156 runs to West Indies in 1958-59 and by an innings and 10 runs to the same team in 1986-87.
