Indians salvage lost pride

ELISTA, Oct 4: After a dismal performance in the fifth round when the men lost to lowly Austria while the women's team went down to Sweden, Indians salvaged some of their prestige. The men's team outwitted Mexico, 2.5-1.5, while Indian women trounced Finland, 2-1, in the their sixth round matches at the Chess Olympiad today.

In the men's section, Anup Deshmukh played a tactical game beating International Master G Russek on the fourth board.

India scored draws in the other boards. Dibyendu Barua came out better in the Petroff defence against Grandmaster G Hernandez on the top board when he won a pawn but ended up with a bad pawn structure after 35 moves.

Abhijit Kunte and Garcia Gonzalez played for about an hour before drawing in 22 moves in Reto opening and split the point. Sasikaran won a pawn in a queen-pawn opening and reached a queen and pawn ending in 40 moves.

Deshmukh sacrificed a piece for two pawns in the Tarrasch defence against Russek, who landed in trouble soon. Anup Deshmukh won the pointwhen he won back the piece through an attack after 42 moves. India have 12.5 points now.Tomorow is a rest day. Indian women also tasted success. Vijaylakshmi Subburaman and Swati Ghate won their games on the top and third boards respectively against Pasikangs and Trantanen while Bhagyashree Thipsay fell to N Kosela.

Vijaylakshmi and Pasikangs played the Trompoovsky attack. The Indian won a piece for two pawns and grabbed more material after the 28th move.Swati Ghate took a pawn in the Sicilian defence and won in a bishop and pawn ending in 54 moves. Bhagyashree was in a bad shape in the Ruy Lopez and lost her game in 53 moves.

In the men's section, USA emerged as sole leader with 18 points while China leads the women's group.
