MUMBAI, OCT 4: A public meeting by the Citizens' Committee for Action on Srikrishna Commission Report on Sunday called for the criminal prosecution of those indicted by the Srikrishna report. The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance government is yet to accept the findings of the report, which was tabled in the state legislature nearly two months ago.The meeting was organised at St Pius College, Goregaon. Mahanagar editor Nikhil Wagle said: ``I don't want to call for the arrest of Bal Thackeray, much as I want it. A government of rioters will not arrest another rioter.''
Demands to punish the guilty would not be heeded by political parties which do not have the courage to do so, said Wagle. ``We should call for the suspension of more than 15 police personnel indicted by the commission,'' he added.
Even as Wagle said radical Hindu parties had no right to enforce chanting of Vande Mataram on anyone, a dozen Shiv Sainiks barged in berating Wagle and chanting the national anthem. ``Let them chant VandeMataram by all means, but they can't force me to do the same,'' he replied.
The demonstrators' protests were drowned in slogans like ``Those who play games like Hitler will die a death like his'' from the audience.
Wagle also called for the prosecution of former police commissioner R D Tyagi for his alleged involvement in the killing of nine Muslims at Suleiman Bakery, Muhammed Ali Road. ``The commission indicted him for having them shot dead from behind even as they were fleeing from the spot. Such a man is now a member of the Sena,'' he said.
Added Janata Dal leader Mrinal Gore. ``If we don't act now, such atrocities will be repeated again and again.'' She accused the government of trying to stifle the impact of the report by printing very few copies.
A pattern seems to be emerging as seen in increasing attacks on members of the minority communities in the name of Hindutva, said speakers, pointing to the recent rape of four nuns in Madhya Pradesh and the subsequent call of the Vishwa HinduParishad asking Christian missionaries to quit India.
``After Muslims, it is now the turn of Christians to bear the brunt of fascist fury,'' said Dolphy D'Souza, a member of the All India Catholic Union. The committee plans to submit a memorandum to president K R Narayanan asking him to intervene in the matter.
