SURAT, Oct 4: State Public Works Minister Savji Korat, who visited the flood-affected areas of the city on Saturday said the Tapi embankments would be lifted, the river depth would be increased and concrete steps would be taken to ensure minimal effect of natural calamities like floods. Korat made an unscheduled visit to the city.Korat also inspected Varachha and Nana Varachha areas where a proposed project involving an overbridge is being considered. He announced that the government was seriously thinking to shift the Gujarat Housing Board societies in the low lying areas of Amroli, Chhapra Bhata and Kosad on the outskirts of the city the worst affected to safer places.
Commenting later, after an inspection of the affected areas, including those on both sides of the river, the minister said the government was seriously considering the raising of embankment levels. He also gave ear to suggestions and recommendations of the flood-affected people and ways of how destruction could be averted.
Korat also inspected the site where the proposed flyover connecting Varachha and Nana Varachha is to be taken up. He was accompanied by Morbi MLA Kanti Amrutia and other officials.
