SURAT, Oct 4: If you've spend hundreds of rupees on passes to some of the `elite' garba clubs in the city and after nine nights of splendour have come to the conclusion that there cannot be something more wonderful, more visually splendid than people clad in chaniya-cholis and dhoti-kurtas dancing in a synchronised manner - wait for another year. You have definitely not seen everything. At least not one of the most enjoyable part of Navratri.Navratri, after all, is not only for those who can afford to buy passes without feeling the pinch, or those who dress up lavishly. For it is the sheri-garba, or the sarvajanik garba, the ones for the commoners, which presents a unique picture of how garba is enjoyed.
A flourescent green three-piece suit, cowboy hat, white rexin shoes and sunglasses with the price tag dangling from the rim is not perhaps the ideal attire for garba, but that is the way it goes. The chaps are out, sporting the brightest of clothes, shoes, glasses, hats and dance away to glory on the nine nights of Navratri.
And if this is not enough, the styles are another treat to watch. Traditional garba styles, break dance, flying kicks, hip twisting, Govinda moves, everything can be witnessed at one go. The dancing styles of all our Hindi film heroes are out on display. One can immediately make out which hero the guys hold in reverence.
Newspapers, too, carry pictures of those dancing to the garba tunes at professional clubs. Agreed, that this is the real garba with people dancing in their traditional attire, but spare a thought for those dancing at the sarvajanik garbas, with equal zest and perhaps more variety than those at the professional clubs.
And believe it or not, hundreds go to watch this crowd, who take liberty with dress code, dance style and other formalities. And it is not only boys, even girls can be seen wearing jeans and high heels. There is the guy who can be seen sporting the Akshay Kumar Mohra dress, whereas another chap has managed to get himself an identical dress as worn by Govinda in the film Ankhen. Yet another can be seen doing a Big B style while a fourth trying to do a Salman Khan - bare his chest. And all this, mind you, while dancing.
Sadly, commercialisation of the festival is taking its toll on these lively garbas. So before they fade out, just spare a night or a couple of hours and watch the action, which you won't find anywhere else.
