Attack on Bhujbal residence: Bail for ex-Mayor

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, OCT 6: The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Esplanade Court today granted bail to Milind Vaidya, who was accused of ransacking leader of the opposition Chhagan Bhujbal's residence last year.

Earlier, Magistrate D R Bhosale 19th court remanded Vaidya, a former mayor, to judicial custody till October 13. Vaidya was instrumental in assembling a mob of 1000-1500 Shiv Sena activists who later went on a rampage at Bhujbal's official residence A-10 near Mantralaya on July 13, 1997.

A bust of Chhatrapati Shivaji, a silver peacock, 10 statues from a showcase and Rs 10,000 in cash were reported missing from Bhujbal's residence after the attack. The Sainiks had also damaged Bhujbal's official car (MH01 T 2424), furniture, air-conditioner, fax machine, window panes and light fittings during the assault.

In his complaint Bhujbal had alleged that the attackers were armed with iron rods, sticks and other lethal weapons.

Vaidya, who was the Shiv Sena nominated mayor between 1996-97, is the 59th accused to begranted bail in the Bhujbal case. His name has been included in a supplementary chargesheet related to the incident.

The attack on Bhujbal's residence was allegedly a fallout of the desecration of Dr Ambedkar's bust at Ramabai Colony, Ghatkopar on July 11,1997. During the attack the Sainiks had accused Bhujbal of insulting party chief Bal Thackeray. Unit-1 of the Crime Branch had arrested Vaidya and charged under section 141, 143, 145, 147, 149, 452, 427, 353, 380, 120B and 37 (1) (3) under the Indian Penal Code.
