NAGPUR, OCT 6: The Republican Party of India (RPI) has decided to launch a massive agitation all over the State in protest against the Vajpayee Government's decision to review the Constitution. The party adopted a formal resolution in this regard at its State convention, held at Chandrapur in Vidarbha region recently. The meeting resolved that the present Constitution is adequate to deal with country's affairs.
``If the government feels that there is a need for amendment, such a provision is in the Constitution which was prepared by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar long back,'' the meeting said, and demanded that the government should scrap the review committee immediately.
If the government fails to withdraw its decision, the pro-Dalit party would launch a militant agitation on the issue, the meeting threatened and decided to demonstrate and take out morchas to the collectorates on the issue in the region from October 7 next as a first step.
In another resolution, the RPI has justified the demand for setting upof a separate Vidarbha state and vowed to fight for it. ``The demand is a long-pending one and even more pressing than the issues pertaining to Vananchal, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh. The Fazal Ali Commission recommended to set up a separate Vidarbha state back in 50's and hence the Union government should reconsider the issue and table an official bill, along with the new three states,'' the meeting demanded.
It also pointed out that a ready-made infrastructure for a State capital is available in Nagpur, including Raj Bhavan, ministers' cottages, Assembly hall, MLA Hostel and Chief Minister's bungalow.
The meeting strongly opposed the Union Government's decision to increase the retirement age for the government employees from 58 to 60 years. Since the country is facing an unprecedented unemployment problem such a move would further aggravate the situation, it felt and demanded that in view of the growing unemployment in the country the Government should instead reduce the retirement age to 55years.
The two-day meeting also took a strong exception to the rejection of Srikrishna Commission report recommendations by the Manohar Joshi government. The RPI demanded that the recommendations of the Commission be implemented in toto and the persons responsible for inciting communal hatred be booked immediately.
A group of Janata Dal activists, led by its Chandrapur president, Vijay Mogre, joined the pro-Dalit party in the meeting. They were welcomed by senior party leaders, R S Gavai, Ramdas Athawale, Shivram Mogha and Jogendra Kawade. The newly elected party members of Bhadrawati Nagar Parishad were also felicitated on the occasion.
