China urged to hold unconditional talks with Dalai Lama

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
BEIJING, OCT 6: British Prime Minister Tony Blair has called on China to hold unconditional talks with exiled Tibetan leader -- the Dalai Lama, the prime minister's spokesman said today.

The call was made in talks with Chinese premier Zhu Rongji. ``The prime minister expressed the hope that there will be a dialogue without pre-conditions with the Dalai Lama,'' the spokesman said.

The Free Tibet Campaign (FTC) had called on Blair yesterday to raise the future of the troubled region during his visit to China.

Blair, who arrived today for a five-day visit, held a 50-minute-talk with Zhu before the meeting was enlarged to include other officials.
