Mithun, Avinash pull off major upsets

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, OCT 6: All those days under the roasting Chennai sun finally paid off. Mithun Murali and Avinash Arun, both unseeded here, pulled off probably their most memorable wins in the boys under-18 first round of the Rs 4.5 lakh DSCL national tennis championship here on Tuesday

Mithun Murali sent top seeded Sanzaruz Zaman packing in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 while Avinash Arun did a quicker job with second seed, Kedar Tembe, bouncing him 6-1, 6-4.

Both players incidentally, started off under the same coach -- Illyas Hussain. Avinash still plays with Illyas while Mithun does time at the Krishnan Tennis Centre too.

Fifth seeded Dipesh Rao of Maharashtra was another one who got a good scare from unseeded Sangram Chapekar but went through in three sets.

In the men's matches this morning, things weren't as turbulent, with all the seeds living to see another round.

Sixth seeded Asif Ismail, this year's Arjuna Award winner, got into a tangle in the second set against Bangalore boy S K Shivshankar butregrouped to win it in the third.

Second seeded Nitin Kirtane had his job cut real short when Rajesh Vohra conceded after losing the first set 3-6.

The gifted Calcuttan, Saurav Panja, back from a long haul in the US took out Kamala Kannan in straight sets. Another southerner, Praveen Kumar, who shuttles constantly between home and Europe, didn't have the final say in a three set affair against Rohan Boppanna.

UZMA PULLS OUT: Women's national champ Uzma Khan pulled out of the $ 5000 ITF Women's circuit in Ahmedabad from October 12-18 due to her academic commitments.
