KVS meet starts today

CHANDIGARH, Oct 6: Defending champions South Zone will take on last year's runners-up North Zone in the opening league match in the badminton event in the girls group in the Kendriya Vidyalaya National sports meet to be held at the Sector 42 Badminton Hall, tomorrow.

In another league match, East Zone will play West Zone. South Zone were the winners of the overall trophy in the last edition of the meet held at Pune.

In the boys group, holders North Zone are all set to retain the title. In the opener tomorrow, they take on East Zone. In the other league matches, South Zone will face Central Zone. South Zone, in their second league encounter will fight it out with East Zone.

In hockey, the matches in the girls group will be played on league basis while in the boys section, the contests will be conducted on league-cum-knockout basis. South Zone were the winners of the last edition of the meet in the girls section while Central Zone was first in the boys group.

In the boys group the team have been divided into four pools. North Zone (R), East Zone (W) and Central Zone (R) are clubbed in pool `A' while pool `B' comprises of North Zone (W), South Zone (R) and East Zone (R). Pool `C' consists of KVS Hostel, West Zone (R) and South (W). There are only two teams in pool `D'- Central Zone (W) and West Zone (W).

The matches in the boys section will be played on astro-turf while encounters in the girls section would be held on the grassy field at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium.

Volleyball, kho-kho, kabaddi, lawn tennis, basketball matches in both the boys and girls groups will be played at the Panjab University Campus. The football matches in the boys category will also be held at PU Campus. The table tennis contests in boys and girls division are slated to be held at the Sector 23 Indoor Table Tennis Hall.
