Women finish 15th in Chess Olympiad

ELISTA, October 12: Indian women got their best placing in recent years in the Chess Olympiad when they tied for 11-15 places at the Chess Palace here today. India trounced Azerbaijan by 2.5-0.5 and reached 22.5 points for a great leap in placing in the last three rounds. The tie will be broken late in the day but india were assured of a 13th or 14th place which is a great result.

Captain S Vijayalakshmi said the team could have done better had they got a better start. Bhagyashree Thipsay considered this as india's best showing similar to 1982, when Indian finished ninth and the number of teams was less with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia Being the only two teams and not 15 as it was now.

Vijayalakshmi beat L Alieva in English opening. Vijayalakshmi won a piece and then won on time. Bhagyashree Thipsay was in command right from the Queen Pawn opening and won an exchange against Mamedyarova. The Indian won three pawns in the end.

Pallavi Shah drew with Sukorova in the Centre Gambit in 20 moves.

Indianmen held France to a 2-2 draw in the last round. Russia-1 and USA were still locked in the battle for the gold.

For India, K Sasikiran might win a gold or silver medal as he beat Hauchard on the bottom board. Sasikiran has 8.5 points from 11 games. Sasi won a piece in the Queen Pawn opening. Abhijit Kunte lost a drawish ending in the Sicilian Alapin against Marciano on the third board in 32 moves. Dibyendu Barua held Dorfman to a draw in the English opening in a bishop ending and Pravin Thipsay drew with Etienne Bacrot on the second board in Sicilian Defence in 66 moves.

The Chinese women won the gold comfortably with 29 points after their quick 1.5-1.5 draw with Bulgaria. Georgia came second with 27 points.
