NASHIK, OCT 12: The Maharashtra State Truck, Tempo, Tanker and Bus Operators Federation has given the government one month to meet its demands, including octroi abolition, failing which it has threatened to go on strike. At a meeting of the federation, its president, Mohindersingh Ghura, pointed out that while recession had hit all industries, including transport, taxes on vehicles were being hiked. He said that because of cut-throat competition, some transporters were resorting to overloading of vehicles and curtailing charges. He urged transporters to remain united and not to overload vehicles.
Speakers at the meeting demanded `industry' status for transporters, who were not getting paid on time by traders. The government had failed to find an alternative to octroi. They said that if the government failed to come out with an alternative within a month, the transporters would go on strike.
The ninth annual meeting of the federation passed resolutions demanding the abolition of octroi, status of anindustry to their business, and protesting the hike in taxes on vehicles and transporters.
