Nature lovers kick up storm over poaching by film stars

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
JAIPUR, OCT 13: The protest over the killing of protected wild animals by film stars near Jodhpur intensified today with several political, social and wild life protection organisations demanding stern action against the accused.

In a statement here, the Shiv Sena's Rajasthan unit demanded that the State Government ask the film unit to pack up and leave the State immediately, as the film stars had hurt people's feelings by killing protected animals.

State unit deputy chief Dilip Singh Beniwal asked people to boycott films of the accused -- Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam Kothari -- against whom cases had been registered on a charge of killing two black bucks and a chinkara.

The Vishnoi community, which considers the animals as sacred, today held a dharna at Jodhpur protesting the killing. The Nature Club, a wild life conservation organisation, has written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi urging her to direct Jagdeep Dhankar, Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly andcounsel for the filmstars, not to represent them in court.

If Dhankar continued to plead in court for the accused, nature lovers would oppose him in the forthcoming Assembly elections, the club said.

The Tourism and Wild Life Society of India submitted a memorandum to the State Government demanding stern action against the filmstars.

However, the Rajasthan Vikas Party (RVP) today maintained there was no prima facie case against the filmstars and that the case had been registered on false charges with an eye on the Vishnoi vote bank in view of the Assembly elections.

RVP vice-president Navneeth Kumar Mathur submitted a memorandum to the State Governor alleging that the stars had been falsely implicated and that the Vishnois were being exploited for political gains.
