Pune pugilists reign supreme in the ring

Express News Service
Mumbai, Oct 13: Diamond Jubilee School student Imran Patel threw a spanner in Pune's party by winning the title in the 45-48 kg category of the Multi-Games Inter-School state boxing championship at Janata High School, Worli this evening.

Pune, threatening to carry out coach Shahu Birajdar's promise of making a clean sweep of the event, finished with a rich haul of seven titles. They also added the best boxer (Jaisingh Patil) and best loser (Subhash Palande) titles to their kitty.

Jaisingh Patil's right glove twice broke through the defences of Nashik's Sunil Navgire to fetch him the 35-39 kgs title. But the lusting Pune contingent was screaming for more, and Bhausaheb Pawar (39-42 kg) provided the punch. Two right hooks landed on opponent Pradeep Bhalerao's nose, and the referee stopped the contest in the first round.

Imran losing to Palande's counter attacks and southpaw Datta Waghmare to Nashik's Brian Sanders cut off the wind supply to the cheering squad's vocal sacs. But the last five bouts belongedto Pune. Three-time sub-junior national champion Laxman Gurikar drew blood from Lala College's Rajesh Pungera, forcing the services of a doctor. And Vishal Dave of Ness Wadia College crowned Pune's glory by knocking out Jitesh Mudaliar of Siddharth College, Mumbai, in 30 seconds, with a fierce left jab.
