Onions and night patroltop Sushma's priorities

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, October 13: Night patrolling in the city and a request to the central government to ease the import-export duty on onions were the first two issues taken up by Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Following a meeting with the Home and Finance Minsters, Swaraj said that the government was working on a plan to introduce night patrolling in the Capital, to keep a check on the rising crime graph.

On the onion front, she has asked finance minister Yashwant Sinha to put onions under the Open General Licence category, easing the import-export duty. This will apparently help Swaraj to keep her promise of selling onions at Rs 5 per kilogram. As of now, the duty on onions is 15 per cent. This comes in wake of the duty waiver on the 15,000 metric tonnes of onion that were imported recently.

Though Swaraj did not address the issue of supply of onions, her government seems determined to get the price under control before the upcoming Assembly elections.

At the first cabinet committee meeting that followed later in the evening, onions and palmoline oil were again on top of the agenda, with portfolios for the new cabinet taking the back seat. Law and order was not apparently discussed at the meeting, with decisions on sale of palmoline oil and onions dominating the discussions.

``The chief minister has asked for onions to be put under the open general licence category to enable easier export-import,'' says chief secretary Omesh Saigal. ``Also it was decided to make loose palmoline oil available in the market since there is a demand for it.''

A high-level meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, where these issues will be taken up. Members of Super Bazar, Apna Bazar, vegetable oil corporation and Consumer Affairs forum will meet the chief minister to discuss the various possibilities.
