Munde's missive to police: Defend self

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, October 14: Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde issued `specific instructions' to the Mumbai police today to use weapons and force in self-defence against gangsters and members of the underworld.

Munde's order comes in the wake of an alarming rise in shootouts including the killing of garment shop owner Bharat Shah. This afternoon Deputy CM met Shah's father Raichand Korshi Nisar who demanded the state government intensify action against gangsters operating in the city. Eleven shootouts in the last 12 days underscored the plight of the department.

``I will not succumb to the demands of gangsters nor am I afraid of them,'' said Raichand. He informed Munde that none of the human right activists who have filed writ petitions against the police department for killing gangsters in encounters have come to meet him. ``Nor have they come to pay condolence to my dead son Bharat,'' he added.

Bharat Shah was gunned down barely 200 meters away from the police headquarters near Juma Masjid when he had goneto make a phone call on October 8. The killing of the Kurup brothers at Bhandup on October 13 caught the Mumbai police off-guard. Later in the night, Munde held a meeting of senior police officers to review the law and order situation. Though details were not available, sources said, the police is likely to turn the heat on the underworld.
