NEW DELHI, October 14: Instead of making a fresh round of promises for the forthcoming elections, the Congress is planning to rehash the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) last year's manifesto. The party manifesto, which is expected to be released in a week, will primarily focus on the fact that the BJP failed to deliver on almost all fronts. The campaign strategy, which is still being thrashed out, will emphasise the fact that the BJP made promises by the truckload when it came to contesting the elections.
However, five years down the line, most of them still remain to be fulfilled. Says Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president, Sheila Dixit: ``We will expose the five years of BJP misrule to the people. They have failed on all fronts water, electricity and law and order''.
Party insiders say that their strategy would be to draw the voter's attention to the fact that the BJP had not taken a single step to either develop or augment the Capital's essential services. ``What have they done for augmenting the power generation, which is the only solution to the problem of power shortage? What have they done to increase the water supply, considering the fact that we have a shortfall of 200 million gallons daily (MGD)? They had promised Delhiites that they would tackle all these problems at the earliest, but they have done nothing in five years,'' said a senior party worker.
Congress workers also point out that the BJP had prom-ised to build one lakh houses annually, but they did not build even a single one. It had also promised to replace all tented schools with pucca schools and abolish Sales Tax, but even that had not been done. Moreover, the BJP had promised to constitute a separate corporation for the residents of trans-Yamuna, but they have done nothing in that regard also, said a gleeful congressman.
``In fact, what have they done apart from changing the chief minister thrice? Is this what they mean by their promise of providing a stable government? Of course, we have our own agenda, but the emphasis is going to be on the failure of the BJP. That is what we are going to exploit in our campaign,'' said a member of the DPCC manifesto committee.
The 12-member manifesto committee, headed by Jag Parvesh Chandra, includes Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler, Deep Chand Bandhu, Tajdar Babbar, Ram Vir Singh Biduri, councillor Dr Narendra Nath, former MP J.P. Agarwal, former DPCC presidents Brij Mohan and Shiv Charan Gupta, DPCC general secretary Ramakant Goswami and former Mayor Mahendra Singh Sathi.
