TMC begins survey of bars, restaurants

Yogesh Pawar
MUMBAI, September 15: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has begun its survey to identify hotels, restaurants, bars and other establishments which violate fire safety norms.

TMC commissioner T S Chandrashekhar ordered the survey on October 6 following the Lake View tragedy. The teams carrying out the survey, comprising town planning, fire and health department officials, are being headed by the deputy municipal commissioners.

The survey will first cover hotels, restaurants and bars and then include other establishments and theatres. ``We have already covered 20 per cent of the more than 1,500 joints within TMC limits,'' informed Chandrashekhar, adding that the total figure of the joints which had been served notices would be available only after the survey was over.

``The teams will also find out if a structure is authorised, if there is any illegal structural modification and if the requisite food licence has been obtained,'' the commissioner said.

After notices are served, Chandrashekhar pointedout, firm action will be taken. ``If public safety is at stake, TMC will have to undertake demolitions,'' he said.

But establishment owners are unhappy with the TMC move. ``If they're bent on proving us wrong, nothing can stop them,'' rued the owner of a restaurant and bar close to Thane railway station.

Some of the owners are seeking political protection. ``Efforts are on to get the commissioner to tone down the drive,'' admitted a member of the Thane Hotel Owners' Assocation.
