DERA BASSI, Oct 15: Hundreds of the residents of the township today gheraoed the office of Municipal Committee and raised anti-establishment slogans in protest against the erratic water supply. Before gheraoing the MC office, the aggrieved people including women and children of the area, took out a procession, passing through the main market, Mohala Chaudhriana and Mohala Banian. They told ENS that they had not received even a drop of water for the last 10 days as all the four tubewells of the areas were non-functional.
MC executive officer D.S. Sandhu admitted the fact said that the water supply would be normalised by this evening. Dissatisfied with the EO's assurance on water supply, the agitated residents went to the office of the SDM and submitted charter of demands. They also demanded action against the officials concerned. MC president Jagjit Singh Dhali was not available for the comment.
The speakers on the occasion warned that they would intensify their agitation if water was not restored by tomorrow. The worst affected were banks, educational institutions and business establishments. The functioning of Civil Hospital of the township, however, remained unaffected.
