IOA to help sport goods industry

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, October 15: The Indian Olympic Association has promised the sports good industry all the help it needs in its march towards the next millennium. "The IOA would like to extend an invitation to the sports goods industry to send its representative as a special invitee for its next AGM," said Randhir Singh, secretary-general of the IOA. He was speaking at a function announcing the dates of the second International Sports, Health and Fitness (ISFE) exhibition to be held in Delhi from December 2 to 5.

Randhir later extended the invitation to DK Mittal, chairman of the Sports Goods Export Promotion Council and Rajan Skahriya, President of Mecpro Expositions, who are organising this exhibition.

The organisers are expecting a turnout of almost 150 exhibitors as compared to the figure of 87 last and more than 30 per cent participation is expected to be from overseas.

The importance of the show was highlighted by the presence of the secretary-general of the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry, Andre Gorgemans from Switzerland, who was a visitor last year, too.

Gorgemans, giving figures of China's exports of sporting goods -- it stands at 3.5 billion dollars a year -- said India was the only country which could match that figure, but unfortunately it has not done so. He lauded such exhibitions which would go a long way in promoting sports goods exports. Among those present at the function were Commonwealth Games gold medallist shooter Mansher Singh, former Asian Games hurdles champion and national record holder, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa and Maj. Gen OP Bhatia, executive Director of the Sports Authority of India.
