AGARTALA, Oct 16: The situation in North-Eastern states is alarming and hard steps should be taken to restore confidence among the people, according to the leader of the Parliamentary Committee attached to Home Ministry.Talking to newsmen here before leaving for New Delhi, committee leader S P Jain expressed serious concern over the law and order situation in the wake of insurgency-related violence in the region. Jain led the team in the absence of Pranab Mukherjee.
He said the committee during its eight-day tour visited Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura and held discussions with the Chief Ministers, Governors, leaders of various political parties and representatives of various Non-Governmental Organisations to assess the law and order situation. He said the committee would submit its report to Parliament in the ensuing session beginning on November 30.
Referring to the situation in Tripura, Jain said the State Government in a memorandum urged the committee to recommend to the Union Government toprovide more funds and more security forces to deal with the situation.
However, Jain did not comment on the performance of the Left Front Government of Tripura.
The Opposition Congress and the BJP in Tripura in separate memoranda to the committee demanded dismissal of the Left Front Government, alleging that it has failed to curb militancy and protect the lives and property of people.
In its memorandum, the BJP team led by H S Rouchoudhury and Rakhal Chakraborty, president and general secretary respectively of Tripura unit, said the militants were running ``a parallel administration'' in the State.
The Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Burman in a separate memorandum gave details of ``day-to-day incidents'' and pleaded that the Government should be asked to resign on moral ground or should be dismissed.
The Parliamentary Committee during its two-day stay in Tripura visited Badharghat drilling site of the ONGC, Tripura University campus, North-Eastern Electric Power Company(NEEPCO) power project near here yesterday.
Jain said the group general manager of ONGC P K Adak requested the committee for more security to the people working in various areas of the project and more funds to increase the drilling activities.
