Indicating the glaring failure of the much publicised `anti-tuition' drive, only one teacher in entire Pune region has been found guilty of taking tuitions in violation of the government resolution issued three months ago.

The resolution restrains any employee working in a private school or college from working in any coaching classes. The office of deputy director here has so far received only 31 complaints in this regard. Of them five pertain to senior colleges, 22 to junior colleges and four to technical institutions. The complaints came up before a committee comprising joint director of higher education, regional deputy director and regional director of technicaleducation through the special complaint cells opened at the office of deputy director and district officers.

Even surprise raids conducted by the committee while probing the handful of complaints have met with little success. ``In seven cases, the classes were found ``non-existent'' at the time of the visit,'' said S.Z. Khatib, assistant director (education).

``It is difficult to track down teachers even after receiving specific complaints as they find enough space to escape using the time and place factor. In some cases even students support them,'' rued Khatib. ``The department has taken an undertaking from the managements, principals and all teaching staff in schools and colleges that they are not taking any tuition class. This has been done as a measure to curb the tuition practice,'' said Khatib.
