DAV-8 bag three titles

CHANDIGARH, Oct 16: DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 players gave outstanding performance in the Chandigarh State Inter-School boys handball championship by bagging titles in under-14, under-17 and under-19 groups even as the championship concluded at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, here today.

In the under-14 group, DAV School overpowered Govt Model School-9, 9-3. The latter conceded the match in the second session.

In the under-17 section, the competition, which was introduced for the first time, DAV School scored a convincing 16-1 victory over Govt High School-37. Manoj (9) and Parduman (5) were instrumental in DAV's victory.

However, it was a tough outing in the under-19 section. DAV School initially faced stiff resistance from Guru Gobind Senior Secondary School-35, but eventually prevailed over their opponents 35-32, to pocket the title.

Mukesh and Satish got 11 and 9 points respectively for the winners while Amrit Pal (10) was the main scorers for the losers.

In kabaddi, held at Govt High School in Sector 22, Govt High School, Kajheri beat Govt High School-28 to win the top slot in the under-17 section.

However, matches in the under-14 and under-19 section were withheld due to a protest lodged by participating teams. According to one of the official, in the under-14 section, a protest was lodged against Khalsa School-35 for fielding overage player while in the under-19 group, a protest was lodged against Govt School, Dhanas.

Till late afternoon, the organising committee could not take any concrete decision and the matches came to a temporary halt. Besides, unprecedented rain in the afternoon made the ground slippery, which forced the officials to postpone the matches.

In basketball being played at Shivalik Public School-41, DAV-8 thrashed Shishu Niketan School-22, 30-4, to reach the semifinals of the boys under-17 section. Amit scored 12 points for the winners.

In another match, Shivalik Public School-41 made short work of DAV Model School-15, 38-26, to reach the last eight stage. Gurwinder with 20 points top scored for SPS-41 while Harminder Singh got 13 points for the losers.

SPS-41 will lock horns with Guru Nanak Public School-36 in the boys under-14 final. SPS-41 beat Govt Model High School-26, 24-21 while GNP-36 defeated St John's High School-26, 18-12.
