Manasi victorious

MUMBAI, Oct 17: Manasi Bhagwat emerged supreme in the sub-junior girls section when she beat Madhurika Patkar 21-15, 15-21, 21-17, 18-21, 21-15 in the final of the Thane District table tennis tournament, co-sponsored by BPCL and Bridgestone ACC and conducted by Youngsters Club, at the CRI Thane, today.

Mamta Prabhu kept herself in line for a double title. She beat Ashwini Mokashi 21-10, 22-20, 21-10 in the junior girls semi-finals and later, she downed Amruta Joshi 21-13, 21-9, 19-21, 21-19 to make women's final.

OTHER RESULTS:
Junior boys (QF): Swapnil Namjoshi bt Amol Ganpatye 21-6, 21-15, 21-4; Gunjan Wagle bt Manas Karmarkar 21-19, 15-21, 21-14, 18-21, 21-17; Aniket Bendre bt Aditya Chemburkar 13-21, 17-21, 21-11, 21-9, 21-14; Chetan Gupte bt Ashwin Nayak 21-18, 22-20, 27-25.

Sub-junior boys (SF): Rohan Waghmare bt Alok Phadnis 13-21, 17-21, 22-20, 21-16, 21-17; Omkar Tanksale bt Aditya Tawade 21-15, 19-21, 21-15, 21-19.Women's singles (SF): Radhika Ghatnekar bt Deepali Javeri 17-21, 21-14,21-17, 21-15.

Junior girls (SF): Amruta Joshi bt Deepali Javeri 15-21, 25-23, 27-25, 21-17.Holy Family score: Holy Family trounced ONGC 3-0 in the MDFA-conducted Harwood football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Holy Family first struck in the fifth minute. Narayan Thakur sent a through pass from the halfline to Glenn Rodrigues. The latter shot home from close range.

On resumption, ONGC faded out after dominating for the first 15 minutes. Glenn scored again in the 52nd minute for Holy Family. Johnny Anthony rounded-off the tally in the 61st minute. Johnny beat two defenders after receiving a pass by Thakur and beat goalkeeper Premnath Kutur with a rising shot to the left corner.

Earlier in a Division III-A clash. Classic swamped Khalsa Gymkhana B 6-0. Naeem Ansari (2), Souvaid Ansari, Asif Ansari, Tarique Shaikh and Abueer Ansari were the goal-getters.

In Division III-B, MLWB, Naigaum, beat Friends 3-2.

RAIN MARS PLAY

:Rain continued to play havoc in the Police ShieldInvitational cricket tournament. The first day's play at two venues, Islam Gymkhana and Parsee Gymkhana, was washed out without a ball being bowled.

The tie between National and Catholic Gymkhana started at 3.45 p.m. at the Brabourne Stadium. National, after being put in to bat, were 75 for two in 26 overs.

The match between P J Hindu Gymkhana and hosts Mumbai City Police began at 4.30 p.m. The cops were struggling at 27 for three in 15 overs. All the three wickets were claimed by India discard Abey Kuruvilla. The tournament is sponsored by Jayantilal Khandwal & Sons and Khandwala Securities.
