Thakkur helps New Hind take lead

MUMBAI, Oct 20: Swapnil Thakkur hit up the first half-century in this year's Bharat Petroleum under-14 cricket tournament, organised by the Worli Sports Club, on Tuesday as New Hind Cricket Club overhauled Kandivali Cricket Club's 117 for six with eight wickets to spare.

Tall opener Thakkur returned unbeaten with 58, including five fours and a six, and was adjudged the man of the match. His unbroken 73-run stand with Rohan Sadarjoshi (25 n.o.) enabled New Hind to spurt from 45 for two to their target of 118 without further loss.

MIG Cricket Club made short work of Maharashtra Young in the other match of the day. Winning the toss, MIG elected to field and dismissed Maharashtra Young for 75 in 20.1 overs in the 25-over per side tournament. MIG reached their target with nine wickets and 13.5 overs to spare.

Manish Raware, who claimed three wickets for four runs in 2.1 overs and scored an unbeaten 15 for MIG, was adjudged the man of the match.

Brief scores:

Kandivali CC 117 for 6 in 25 overs(Vaibahv Mane 23 n.o.) lost to New Hind SC 118 for 2 in 22.2 overs (Swapnil Thakkur 58 n.o., Rohan Sader Joshi 26 n.o.). MoM: Swapnil Thakkur.

Maharashtra Young CC 75 all out in 20.1 overs (Ankit Chauhan 3-14, Manish Raware 3-4) lost to MIG CC 79 for 1 in 11.1 overs (Sanil Rane 29 n.o.) MoM: Manish Raware.

Bandra Packers prevail

Bandra Packers prevailed 1-0 over Rhino in the MDFA-conducted Harwood football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Rhino started off well with good combination but they were wayward in their attempts at the target.

In the 12th minute, Rhino's S Salim had an open chance to take the lead. He had only goalkeeper Walter Daniel to beat but he shot straight into the 'keeper and the ball was cleared by Amol Khere.

In the second-half, Bandra Packers dominated the proceedings and in the 53rd minute a penalty was awarded in favour of them. Clarence Remedious took the spot-kick but his shot rebounded off the post.

In the 60thminute, Ajit Khokate of Rhino was given the marching orders by referee Camilo Mendes for dangerous play.

Packers' match-winner came in the 65th minute. A pass from Aldrin Bird from the left was neatly anticipated by Pascal Koli. And the latter beat Rhino 'keeper Walter Daniel from close range to give Packers a victory.

In Division III-B, Lazio defeated seven-strong Khalsa Gymkhana B 3-0. Edwin Fernandes (2) and Nitin Pillay were the goal-getters.

Young Dynamos failed to turn up for their Division III-A clash against Dadar Young Boys.

Swiss Caterers triumph

Swiss Caterers won the third Bombay Catholic Sabha (Kalina unit) three-day instant football tournament when they pipped Ruthless Sports Club (Borivli) 3-2 via the tie-breaker in the final at the St Mary's High school ground.

Both teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Swiss Caterers were put ahead by Sheldon Fernandes but Ruthless got their equaliser through Rajiv Jose.

In the tie-breaker, Conrad Baptist, RIchie Misquitta,John Leitao scored for the winners while Rajiv Jose and Sagar Amin netted for Ruthless.

In the veterans final, Borivli got past Kalina 3-2. Gokul Kanchan, Victor D'Silva and Balakrishnan Kunder scored for the Borivli outfit. Anthony Barretto and Ganesh Rao scored for Kalina.

John Leitao of Swiss Caterers was adjudged as the best player while Rakesh Yadav of Ruthless was awarded the best player of the final trophy. The most promising player award went to Shane Mascarenhas of Fleegans while Caitano Fernandes of Kalina Rangers won the highest scorer trophy.

Ruparel champs

DG Ruparel College clinched the women title in the inter-district kabaddi championships conducted by Sports and Youth Services of Maharastra State at Kinvat today, according to a press release.

Ruparel defeated Nagpur 42-32 in the final. Captain Lata Shinde and Meghali Korgaonkar stood out and got a support from her teammates Sai Mahtre and Kanchan Rane.

Bridge tourney

Lokmanya Seva Sangh, Vile Parle, will conductits annual bridge tournament on October 24 and 25. The tournament will commence at 2 pm on Saturday, and will be played in a Swiss League of duplicate. Entry fee for duplicate is Rs 400.

Bagul to lead

Sangram Bagul will lead the Deodhar XI under-16 team from the Thane region for the Shatkar Tounament.

MCA selection trials

The Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) under-14 selection trials (between 12 & 14 years) will be conducted as under:

1 To select one team from Thane District. (Mira Road to Dahanu on Western Railway side and Thane to Bhiwandi - Badlapur-Ambernath and Navi Mumbai on Central Railway side) on October 24 at 9 a.m. at the Wankhede Stadium.

To select two teams fromBrihan Mumbai Area (Churchgate to Dahisar on Western Railway side and CST to Chembur-Mulund on Central Railway side) on October 26 at 9 a.m. at the Wankhede Stadium.

The boys willing to attend the selection trials should bring with them the original birth certificate and two xerox copies of the same.
