Joshi, Singhi top group

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Oct 20: Top seed Devendra Joshi survived a Sarang Shroff scare while Antim Singhi overcame qualifier Manish Adnani to finish joint leaders of Group A at the end of the NSCI Invitational Snooker Tournament league matches at the National Sports Club of India here, today.

Today's victories saw them qualify for the quarter-finals which gets under way on Thursday alongwith Chirag Ramakrishnan, Ashok Shandilya (both Group B), Rafat Habib, Alok Kumar (C) and Yasin Merchant (D).

It was a spirited performance by Shroff who almost managed to upset the National champion which might have seen him finish joint second in the Group for a play-off.

With the frame scores tied at 3-all, Joshi came up with a touch of brilliance to smash a break of 49. While the match looked to slip out of his hands, Shroff rallied to get the score at 37-49. But a fatal miss while potting the green threw the initiative back to his opponent. Joshi made no mistake later on to pot the brown after the green and put the match beyondShroff.

Singhi, seeded 20, quelled Adnani 4-2, to tally eight points from five matches -- same as Joshi. Both Singhi and Joshi will now have to meet in the play-off tomorrow to decide the Group leader.

In an intense encounter second seed Shandilya booked his quarter-final berth with a 4-3 victory over seventh seed Rupesh Shah. It was the second consecutive defeat that spelled doom for the Ahmedabad lad who had shown much promise earlier in the tournament.

Shandilya finished next to Chirag Ramakrishnan in Group B who beat Amit Saboo 4-1 in a late match.

Third seed Alok Kumar entered the knockout round ending Rafat Habib's, winning streak with a 4-0 win. Nevertheless Rafat finished on top of Group C.Results (League, Day Five)
