CHANDIGARH, Oct 20: Water supply to various southern sectors was badly affected this morning even as officials of the departments of Electricity and Public Health tried to pass the buck as to the cause of the breakdown. There was no water supply to these sectors during the intervening time between 6.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. today causing a lot of harassment to the residents, especially those who had to go for work. Mercifully, water supply was maintained for nearly two hours after it was restored at around 9.30 a.m.
The areas which were affected included Sectors 36 to 41 and some parts of Sector 42. Asking department officials why the sectors were not receiving water, brought forth no clear answers.
A Public Health official, when contacted, said the problem arose from frequent power trippings in the Sector 37 waterworks for about an hour causing suspension of water supply. "The fault has been rectified and the supply is back to normal," he added.
However, Superintending Engineer (Electricity) P.S. Chawla, when contacted, said the problem lay in the motors of the waterworks. According to the reports with me, it was just a 10-minute power-shutdown from 7.20 a.m.," he claimed.
