Woman alleges harassment by husband, in-laws

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
S.A.S. NAGAR, Oct 20: The Mohali Police are looking into a complaint lodged by a resident of Phase-X here, in which she has stated that she is being harassed by her in-laws, including her husband, a captain in Merchant Navy, for not bringing enough dowry.

Married to Charanjeet Singh Mann in 1994 at Ludhiana, Neelam Maan allegedly brought along gold ornaments and two fixed deposit receipts of Rs 50,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively besides other valuable articles after marriage.

While showing bruises on her body caused by the alleged beating up by her in-laws to this correspondent, she alleged that during her entire married life of five year, she had never even allowed to wear her gold ornaments despite her repeated pleadings. ``My in-laws, including my husband, while persistently ridiculing me for having brought very little jewellery, used to taunt me to bring more from my parents's house if I was so fond of wearing the same,'' narrates Neelam Mann as she breaks down. ``They even used to harass my three-year old daughter'', she adds.

She, in her complaint to Mohali Superintendent Police B.S. Randhawa, alleged that she was repeatedly forced to ``admit in writing of having illicit relations with her elder brother.'' On her refusal, she alleged, that she was tortured mercilessly and was not allowed to meet her parents. She was even allegedly not allowed to meet her daughter.

The police officials inquiring into these allegations said that statements of aggrieved woman and her father had already been recorded and submitted to legal experts to seek their opinion. ``Once the legal opinion is received, a case will be registered in this regard,'' Mohali SP B.S. Randhawa told Chandigarh Newsline.

They termed it a dispute between two families of SAS Nagar and said that they earlier agreed to resolve the issue amicably. ``Following the request made by both the family members, no case had been registered at that time'', the policemen said.

When contacted on telephone at Charanjit Singh's residence in Phase-XI for comments, Karnail Singh, claiming to be his uncle, termed all allegations made in the complaint as false and fabricated to defame Charanjeet Singh and the family members.
