SHIMLA, Oct 20: Diwali, this year, was different for lepers, orphans, destitutes, deaf and dumb and visually handicapped children in Shimla as they celebrated the festival with state Governor V S Rama Devi and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal here yesterday.The Governor visited Balika Ashram at Mashobra and the Destitute Children's Home and Deaf, Dumb and Blind School at Dhalli and watched cultural items presented by inmates. She distributed sweets, crackers and candles amongst the children.
Gifts were also distributed amongst the inmates of the Home for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind, Durgapur, and the orphanage at Tutti Kandi.
Rama Devi asked the Red Cross Society to provide washing machines for the destitute children home, and directed concerned authorities to repair the pathway leading to the Blind School at Dhalli.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister visited the Maha Himalya Shiv Colony, Fagli Road, where he exchanged greetings and distributed sweets among lepers and jhuggiwalas. Minister of State for Horticulture Narinder Bragta, who represents Shimla Assembly constituency, also accompanied Dhumal.
The CM announced that the government would soon construct a ``Kusht Asharam'' in Shimla with all basic facilities. He also announced the construction of two blocks of ``sulabh shochayalya'' in Maha Himalaya Shiv Colony for the lepers and jhuggiwalas.
He later went to the Bal Ashram at Tuti Kandi and Kastubra Gandhi Savodya Ashram, Rockwood, Shimla and distributed sweets among the children.
Earlier in the morning, Dhumal along with his family, visited the Jhakhu temple. Bragta also visited the temple.
