A state of consumption
For years I have waited to tell you my three-dogs-and-the-leash story. This, I reckon, is a pretty good time to do so. Pressure is mounting on the Prime Minister to do something dramatic, perhaps within the next three days to `revive' the economy as he goes out to address the annual general meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

A defining moment for Sharif
Four months short of a normal three year tenure, the Pakistan army chief General Jehangir Karamat submitted his resignation after criticising the Nawaz Sharif government for its failure to create a National Security Council. The resignation has triggered speculation that Sharif would have actually undermined his position, despite easing out the last powerful opponent from office.

Keep dialogue going
At the very least, the Islamabad talks have established that the governments of India and Pakistan see the necessity of keeping the dialogue going. This is apparent from the generally restrained language of public statements after the talks and more especially from the agreement to hold another round of discussions on confidence building measures and on Kashmir in February 1999.
