NEW DELHI, Oct 22: The heat is now on Romesh Sharma, the alleged Delhi-based frontman of Dawood Ibrahim, for his ``Congress connections''. The Union Home Ministry, it is now learnt, had played a key role in activating the Central investigating agencies to trap Sharma who has been accused of amassing unaccounted wealth of over Rs 500 crore in the last few years. The investigating agencies, after securing three days' police remand of Sharma, are now busy unearthing his dealings with a host of politicians from several parties. But most of them, according to sources, happen to be Congressmen -- many of them occupy key positions in the party now who developed a rapport with Sharma all these years.
Officials revealed that at least three senior Congressmen now stand to be interrogated for their links with the Dawood's ``most important man in Delhi''.
In this connection, much is being relied upon the extravagant parties Sharma threw in the Chattarpur farmhouse. The investigating agencies have reportedlyobtained the details of the guests who would oblige Sharma.Significantly, the role of the Congress MP from Tejpur (Assam), M K Subba, who has charged Sharma with grabbing his Chattarpur farmhouse in the outskirts of South Delhi is also being probed from all angles. A lottery baron, Subba is currently fighting a case in Guwahati High Court challenging his nationality.
The case has been filed by BJP leader I P Hazarika.
According to sources in the North Block, both Sharma and Subba had joined hands with a prominent non-Congress leader to set up an amusement park. Subba reportedly gave Sharma access to the farmhouse to run an ``office'', for the purpose of clinching the amusement park deal. Later, the plans for the park fell through but Sharma occupied the farm house.
The investigating agencies, according to sources, will shortly interrogate Subba along with the three Congress leaders. According to a senior official, Subba's claim that he had offered the farmhouse to Sharma for ``maintenance'' was full ofholes.
