Fatehgarh Sahib: Jhanda Singh (55), a sewadar of Gurdwara Patshahi Chhewien, was allegedly murdered with a sharp-edged weapon here in the gurudwara complex last night. He belonged to Longowal village in Sangrur district. Talking to the media persons here today SSP Paramjit Singh said that after performing the rituals, the garanthi left for home at about 8 p.m. and the sewadar stayed back. Today morning, when the garanthi came to the gurdwara at 4.30 a.m. he found Jhanda Singh lying dead in the verandh. Paramraj Singh said that the golak (charity-box) of the gurdwara was found in the nearby fields. The police have registered a case.Sangrur: During a special drive launched against the bootleggers in the Dirba and Sunam area, 950 pouches of various brands of liquor, 60 bottles of country liquor and 44 bottles of various brands of whiskey were recovered from a brand new Esteem car near Khanauri mandi, according to a press release issued here today by Excise Inspector S.P. Pahuja. The Esteem car has been impounded and cases have been registered. The bootleggers brought to the book include Jagjit Singh of Kaithal, Sanjay Kumar and Paramjit Singh of Khanour.
Abohar: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has sanctioned Rs 1 lakh to tackle the problem of water accumulation being faced in the local court complex. Disclosing this, Hans Raj Sarsava, the president of the local bar association, said that that CM announced the sanction when a deputation of association called on him yesterday at Muktsar. Sarasva said that the CM also assured a grant for bar room and library.

Seminar
Amritsar: To create awareness amongst the general public about drug addiction and mental health a seminar and camp dedicated to the tercentenary celebration of the Khalsa Panth would be organised on October 24 and 25 by Amritsar Neurosciences Charitable Hospital. Giving the information, Director of the hospital J.P. Bhatia said a declamation contest would be organised and an exhibition would also be arranged during the seminar. He said participants from India and abroad would deliver lectures on the subject.
Rally
Sangrur: A rally would be held on Saturday under the aegis of the Anti-Pollution Committee at the Pharmana chowk in support of the demand for shifting of the Agra Chemicals Ltd to some safer place away from the Sangrur town. Stating this here today, president of the committee Kiranjit Singh Sekhon said that the leaders of various organisations had been invited to address the rally to press for the acceptance of their demands. Sekhon said that the shifting of the factory had been necessitated after the gas leakage from the unit on the night of October 3.

Abohar: Hanuman Dass Goyal, member Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, has demanded an extension of the route of 1085 UP/4086 DN train up to Bathinda, which presently runs between Delhi and Sirsa. In a letter written to the officials of the Railways, Goyal said the that the extension would help residents of the belt, as passengers travelling by trains like Udhyan Abha, Punjab Mail and Jodhpur-Kalka Express would be able to use the extended train.
Sangrur: Resentment prevails among the PSEB engineers of Sangrur region because of the non-implementation of the scales of assistant engineers by the management as per the agreement with the PSEB Engineers Association, Parveen Kumar Bansal, a regional council member, told ENS today. He said that in a meeting of the association (Sangrur region) deep concern was expressed over stagnation, vacant posts of engineers and grant of various allowances.
Moga: The Shaheedi Conference has unanimously resolved to oppose the new transport policy of the state government. Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the president and Gurdeep Singh Moti, the general secretary, of the Punjab Government Motor Transport Workers Union said that the Punjab roadways employees would stage rallies and dharnas on October 27 and November 6 at all the depots. They would stage a dharna in front of the residence of Punjab Transport Minister Raghbir Singh on November 12. The employees have opposed the decision of the state government to grant new permits to the private operators for plying of air conditioned buses from all district headquarters to Chandigarh.
Amritsar: CPI leader Satya Pal Dang said that PCMS doctors who were issuing false medical legal reports by taking bribes should be dismissed. Dang said that the doctor whom the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Court, Amritsar had recommended to be ``thrown out of government service'' should be suspended immediately. He said that certain doctors suspended for issuing false medical reports admitted that they were paying 50 per cent of the bribe to the district health authorities. ``In my opinion it should be inquired into if the share reached Chandigarh also'', he said.
Amritsar: H.S. Soch, Guru Nanak Dev University V-C has consented to solve the problems of Guru Nanak Dev University Research Scholars Association (GURUSA). While attending a meeting organised by the GURSA here today, Soch promised removal of all the obstacles in way of the research scholars. Amritsarjit Singh, president of the GURSA, said it was the first step towards a healthy atmosphere to promote research activities in the campus.
Amritsar: A special training camp would be organised from October 26 for the educated unemployed youths who have applied for the posts of panchayat secretaries to the Services Selection Board, Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh informed here today.
Seminar in central jail on Oct 24
Patiala: The Patiala branch of the Association for Social Health in India will organise a special seminar on October 24 at the central jail here. Swami Arbindanand would address the inmates during the seminar. Ajanta Dyalan would be the chief guest for the women's ward. District and Session Judge K.S. Grewal would be the chief guest for the men's ward, the president of the association Sukhwinder Khanna would preside over the seminar.
Hans Raj Hans to be honoured
Patiala: The Punjabi Vikas Manch has decided to honour the famous singer Hans Raj Hans for his valuable contribution to Punjabi, according to a press release issued here today by the manch. The release said that the manch will organise a function on October 25 in the auditorium of the State College of Education. State Minister for Culture Jagir Kaur would preside over the function and Minister for Higher Education Manjit Singh Calcutta would be the chief guest. State Minister for Printing and Stationery Surjit Singh Kohli would be the special guest on the occasion. Patron of the manch Padamshree Rameshinder Singh would release a souvenir, according to the release.
