Thane floods caused loss of Rs 15 crore: report

Mumbai, Oct 23; Flash floods in the rural areas of Thane district in mid-September has resulted in a loss of nearly Rs 15 crore, according to a report released by the district administration on Thursday.

The affected area received nearly 555 mm of rainfall over two days from September 17 leading to heavy floods in and around Palghar taluka. The losses were due to houses submerged (3783), damaged totally (151) or partly (270), lost cattle heads and belongings, according to the report.

Manor in Palghar taluka was the worst-hit town with a total of 27,245 persons from 5,283 families affected. Palghar taluka accounted for a loss of around Rs 14.67 crore and as many as 23,811 persons were affected due to the floods in the taluka. Of the total number of villages affected (178), a majority (101) were from Palghar while out of 207 hamlets hit, 202 were from Palghar.

The district administration has distributed a total of Rs 1.66 crore as ex-gratia to the flood-hit from villages in the talukas of Palghar, Dahanu,Talasari, Jawhar, Wada and Mokhada, stated Additional Collector of Thane district, R D Shinde who is also the in-charge of the rural belt of Thane district. Of this Palghar taluka accounted for the maximum ex-gratia at Rs 1.44 crore, he added.

Meanwhile, Om Prakash Sharma, a senior BJP leader and former National Council member who visited the affected areas for a follow-up revealed today that the Centre is yet to clear the state government's proposal on the construction of doors to the Surya dam. The government has already spent over Rs. 266 crore on the dam which is a part of a plan to reach the reach water supply mainly to the tribals. However, Sharma revealed, due to lack of proper distribution channels the water from the dam goes into creek denying the tribals any water.
